The Covid Omicron BA4 and 5 wave has peaked in Australia and NZ with cases and hospitalizations falling, but the Ardern Government is still keeping the whole of NZ in the orange setting which enforces a mask mandate in retail. The Victorian Government announced free N95 and KN95 masks thereby de facto admitting that all other masks are useless. The deaths that are recorded with covid continue to be overwhelmingly in elderly people who had other comorbidities and underlying health conditions.
The JYNNEOS monkeypox vaccine has arrived in Australia but its limited supply means only gay, bisexual men and other men who have sex with men who have multiple frequent partners or visit gay bathhouses will be eligible.
A surveillance study published in the New England Medical Journal has discovered a new novel Langya henipavirus that has infected 35 people in two eastern Chinese provinces and likely jumped from Shrews to humans. The Sun UK newspaper sensationally reported this as potentially a new pandemic, while the Washington Post reported that the first of these 35 cases were discovered in 2018 and there is no evidence of human-to-human transmission given no close contacts were infected.
The new CCP ambassador to Australia Xiao Qian addressed the National Press Club in Canberra this week. In his speech, he claimed Taiwan’s reunification with mainland China should not be termed an invasion and that the Taiwanese might need re-education post-reunification to know they are part of China.
Recently elected National MP for Tauranga Sam Uffindell has been suspended from caucus following revelations he was a violent high school bully, the National Party is also investigating claims that a former female flatmate of Unffindell’s at university had to move out over claims of bullying and intimidation.
On the Labour side, first-term MP Gauraav Sharma has alleged he was bullied by Parliamentary Services as well as by party whips. Jacinda Ardern has denied all knowledge as have other MPs. Former Labour MP Darien Fenton private messaged Sharma saying he should have gone through the proper channels including the Public Service Association and criticized his poor discipline.
The implosion of the NSW Coalition Government continues triggered by the controversy over former Deputy Premier John Barilaro being offered the role of the state’s trade ambassador to New York. It led to the resignation of Trade Minister and Deputy Liberal Leader Stuart Ayers with Treasurer Matt Kean elected as his replacement. This is despite Kean retweeting criticism of the sacking of Small Business Eleni Petinos by his Premier Dom Perrottet, Kean and Pentinos used to sext each other.
Perrottet today released a report by former Federal Sex Discrimination Commissioner Elizabeth Broderick about the culture inside NSW Parliament House and called the findings “sobering, confronting and completely unacceptable”. The voluntary anonymous self-reporting method of gathering data found that 1 in 5 people experienced sexual assault and 1 in 5 experienced sexual harassment.
The bartender who spat in the beer of Melbourne National Socialist Jimeone Roberts at the Irish Times Pub was fired and an apology and compensation were issued to Roberts and his friends. Local Antifa activists were triggered by this as they seem to believe that this disgusting unhygienic conduct from a hospitality worker was okay as it was targeted at someone whose ideology they hate.
Sydney Morning Herald columnist, Chair of the Australian Republican Movement and husband of Lisa Wilkinson Peter Fitzsimons has refused to release the audio of his interview with new Country Liberal Party Senator Jacinta Price after she claimed he was ‘aggressive’ during the interview and accused her ‘giving a voice to racists’ because she opposes having an Indigenous voice to Parliament enshrined in the Constitution.
Stephen is covering the Auckland Mayoral election which will be held on October 8. It is an open field with Labour Mayor Phil Goff not seeking re-election. Hospitality businessman Leo Molloy has withdrawn from the race as his polling drops. A poll released Thursday shows Labour and Greens endorsed Efeso Collins in the lead but far from an outright majority.
As the show enters a hiatus until September we finish with something silly which was Liberal Opposition Leader Peter Dutton photographed eating a dagwood dog at the Ekka Fair in Brisbane.
