Rushdie had a fatwa placed on him in 1989 by Iranian Ayatollah Khomeini over his book The Satanic Verses. Leaders around the world decried this attack on free speech even though most of them have supported laws against free speech and blasphemy.
A 63-year-old man has been charged with firearms offenses after he discharged a gun at Canberra airport yesterday. Thankfully no one was injured, only some damage to the glass at the airport. In the immediate aftermath, Twitter hoped it was a white supremacist shooter but the bizarreness of the shooting makes it looks likely mental illnesses were the cause.
