As part of the Unshackled’s coverage of New Zealand’s general election campaign we spoke with a number candidates and activists so we could gain an understanding of the politics of New Zealand, what were the big issues in the campaign and probably most relevantly what Australians can learn from the election.
In any election campaign the media has a large influence and often the mainstream media pushes a particular narrative. Though alt-media websites like the Unshackled are trying to change this and thankfully there are like minded people in New Zealand doing the same thing. One successful alt-media website is Whale Oil Beef Hooked founded in 2005 and boasts a readership in the hundreds of thousands a month We were lucky to meet up with its founder and editor Cam Slater in a noisy South Auckland cafe.
We ask him about what was the catalyst that made him go into media and how he has been able to build such a strong readership in a tiny nation such as New Zealand. We also explore what types of stories he has found gain traction and what are his blogging patterns. We also learn about the enemies he has made over his time and how he handles the challenges of notoriety. We also get his summary of the election campaign and how it will influence New Zealand politics going forward.
