Xi Jinpingspeech

Newly installed Chinese President- for- Life Xi Jinping went into blistering nationalist mode as he declared China’s willingness to fight “the bloody battle” in order to regain its “rightful place in the world”. Considering its aggressive, ambitious and ambiguous moves in key areas in Southeast Asia, Latin America, Africa and Europe, Xi may simply be alluding to his plans for global domination.

The nationalist- tinged speech was delivered in front of an estimated 3,000 Communist Party of China (CPC) in the Great Hall which is located next to historic Tiananmen Square:

“The Chinese people have been indomitable and persistent, we have the spirit of fighting the bloody battle against our enemies to the bitter end. Only those who are accustomed to threatening others will see everyone as a threat.”

Xi’s speech targeted Taiwan and Hong Kong which are autonomous but regions that Beijing wants to unify politically with mainland China. According to Xi, all efforts to remain independent from China are “doomed”.

State television networks readily focused their TV cameras to Taiwan’s delegates when Xi continued his attacks on separatist regions:

“All acts and tricks to separate the country are doomed to fail and will be condemned by the people and punished by history. Total unity was the collective hope of all Chinese people.”

Since 2012, President Xi has taken an aggressive approach in expanding China’s military going as far as building structures and runways in disputed islands in the South China Sea.

In 2015, the United Nations awarded the Philippines complete territorial rights over islands located in the Western Philippine Sea. China rejected the ruling and with the cooperation of new Philippine President Rodrigo R. Duterte who is suspected of having ties with communist groups in the country, Xi continued building military structures on the islands.

Xi successfully orchestrated a political masterpiece by having the two-term limit scrapped in China’s constitution, paving the way to becoming President-for-Life. Xi’s legacy is tied in to his ambitious Silk Road initiative which plans to establish trading routes in Southeast Asia, Africa, Latin America and Europe.

Many Chinese have criticized Xi for his “strong man” approach in governing China. Online commentators have compared Xi to another despot, North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un.
