AFL Back to Its Virtue Signalling Worst
The AFL as a corporate body is imploding, and it is the diehard fans who are suffering, seeing the game they love being hijacked by leftist social justice warriors, taking money from their membership fees to pursue a leftist agenda. The AFL is finding that being the most virtuous organisation that ever existed is harder than it looks.
It’s had a shocker of a month, they were missing in action when their former diversity officer Ali Fahour king hit another player in an amateur league AFL game, and only accepted his resignation after that league gave Fahour a life ban. Even then the AFL expressed their sadness at his departure and told us all not to judge him for his thuggery (which was not just one isolated incident).
Following that there has been the complete overreaction by the forced resignation of two AFL executives for having extra martial affairs with other female AFL employees. There was no sign of these executives taking advantage of these women. Although marital infidelity is considered by most to be grave sin, it is ever a sackable offence and any of an employer’s business?
Even feminist sports consultant Catherine Lumby said it was very dangerous for the AFL to start policing their staff’s personal lives stating “I think it’s Nazi Germany if we start legislating about who we can have sex with or what people do in their private lives”.
The announcement of the resignations was a complete own goal by the AFL. These affairs were not in the gossip pages of any newspaper, nobody was none the wiser about these relationships. But the AFL decided to write itself some sex scandal headlines and open itself up to accusations of having a sleaze culture.
They were dragged kicking and screaming to accept Fahour’s resignation yet fed these other two executives to the media wolves. Maybe if Simon Lethlean and Richard Simkiss were Muslim and were instead maybe just taking on second wives the AFL would approve of it as part of their diversity program.
It’s reputation in the eyes of social justice warriors would now appear to be in tatters. But the leftist virtue signalling will continue, the AFL hasn’t given it up quite yet. This weekend it is the AFL’s second annual LGBT Pride Game between the Sydney Swans and St Kilda at the Sydney Cricket Ground. The same fixture last year featured rainbow coloured numbers, socks and goal umpire flags.
The Pride Game it should be pointed out along with the rest of its promotion of the LGBT agenda (it is another corporate supporter of same sex marriage) was pushed by amateur gay AFL footballer Jason Ball. Ball was the Greens candidate for the inner-city Melbourne seat of Higgins at last year’s federal election and also was a finalist last year for Young Australian of the Year. Says it all really.
The AFL will now have had two LGBT themed games this year, with Essendon Bombers having their Red and Black Pride Game against the West Coast Eagles earlier this year as part of IDAHOBIT Day observance. Because of course you can never have too much diversity. It would appear now the AFL have an unhealthy obsession with who people sleep with, it has recently disapproved of its employees have heterosexual relations but is eager for them to have homosexual relations.
The AFL by being this committed to LGBT agenda has also fallen into the contradictory leftist position of supporting that and appeasing Islam. The AFL celebrated Ramadan last month, and let’s not forget the special treatment it gave to its prominent Muslim player Bachar Houli both on and off the field recently. They still haven’t worked out Islam doesn’t take too kindly to homosexuality.
You would think the events of the last month would have made the AFL reconsider its commitment to social justice causes and just get back to the footy. It’s hard not be a hypocrite when trying to live by leftist dogma. But no, despite its creditability to preach to the rest of us about being moral now shattered, the AFL is trying to pretend like none of that happened and is back telling us all not to be homophobes.
The AFL is just as bad as our government, the media and the rest of corporate Australia when it comes to pursuing a leftist agenda. Those who say us fans of AFL upset at the path it has taken are told we should stop following it. It is not as simple as that, AFL for those south of the border, takes on a religious observance. Maybe what is needed is a fans revolt against the AFL leadership, and tell them to stop the virtue signalling and get back to putting on one of the greatest shows on earth.
