Show Description
On this week’s review show we are joined once again by Co-Editor in Chief of The Unshackled Sukith Fernando. We begin with the story that has dominated Australian politics throughout the week and that is the news that Australia will finally be getting a promised plebiscite on same sex marriage, albeit only a voluntary postal one. This was after the Liberal Partyroom reaffirmed its commitment to hold a plebiscite on the issue despite a media campaign to have them switch to a free vote. We are glad the plebiscite is going ahead and can’t believe the behavior of the same sex marriage advocates in fighting the plebiscite every step of the way because they believe a debate will be too triggering.
We also discuss the continuing problem of soaring electricity prices. The government held a meeting with energy retailers this week to discuss high prices, retailers blamed uncertainty over the government delaying a decision on whether to adopt the Clean Energy Target for rising prices. We of course point out the real explanation for rising prices is successive governments’ policies to make coal fired power more expensive and they have a nerve in now complaining about high power prices. We state its never too late to reverse this climate madness and allow Australia to utilize its energy abundance to stop the trend of Australians living in energy poverty.
We also discuss the emergence of homeless tent city in Sydney’s Martin Place, the state government has now passed a new law to give itself the power to have it removed. The alleged homeless people have rejected temporary accommodation and it has been discovered many of them earn too much money and are not Australian citizens to be eligible for benefits. The self appointed Mayor of the tent city Lanz Priestly has been revealed to have a violent criminal past. This is nothing more than a leftist stunt designed to embarrass a conservative state government, but it hasn’t resulted in the outpouring of public sympathy the organizers were hoping for thanks to the media reporting on who these people really are.
We also discuss the heightening of tensions between Donald Trump and North Korea. Trump has said the US will respond with “fire and fury” if threats by North Korea continue and North Korea responded by claiming they can hit the US island of Guam. Rhetoric between two nations increased since Trump’s Presidency and North Korea has had a series of successful and unsuccessful missile launches. North Korea has always been a rogue state, but media commentators are claiming this is different and we should be afraid. We discuss what Trump’s goal here might be and should we really fear a nuclear showdown given the capability disparity between the United States and North Korea.
