There has been much ridicule over the fact that Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey felt compelled to apologize for enjoying a Chick-fil-A Sandwich during Gay Pride Month. Chick-fil-A is a successful American fast food franchise that sells chicken sandwiches but has found itself the target of various boycott attempts by the left due to its support of traditional marriage and family values.

The company has an unapologetic Christian culture with a goal “To glorify God by being a faithful steward of all that is entrusted to us. To have a positive influence on all who come in contact with Chick-fil-A”. As a result of this ethos, Chick-fil-A is not open on Sundays, Easter or Christmas.

The left has had Chick-fil-A in their sights since 2012 when their CEO Dan Cathy confirmed after it was reported that the company had donated $5 million to family and Christian organisations that they were “guilty as charged” in supporting the traditional family “We are very much supportive of the family — the biblical definition of the family unit. We are a family-owned business, a family-led business, and we are married to our first wives”.

This not only led to boycott efforts but the Mayors of Boston and Chicago at one point said they would try to prevent Chick-fil-A’s opening up in their cities by denying them planning approval, a complete abuse of state power. In response former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee initiated Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day on August 1, 2012, to encourage Americans to show their support for the under-fire company and have a meal there. On that day the company had record-breaking sales.

Chick-fil-A has easily survived but the left has not forgotten it is a corporation which doesn’t toe the progressive left social justice line, or that will be bullied into doing so. This is why they are now reduced to simply shaming their fellow progressive like Dorsey for simply enjoying of one their chicken sandwiches. What made Dorsey’s purchase even worse was he was boasting about how he saved money on his purchase, endorsing Chick-fil-A for providing good value for money.

He received backlash on his own Twitter platform with users eager to remind him June is Gay Pride Month with one user saying “Why is Twitter boosting a notoriously anti-gay company during #PrideMonth”. Dorsey quickly apologized “You’re right, Completely forgot about their background”. It would seem that Dorsey has to wait until July when Pride Month is over before he can enjoy a Chick-fil-A sandwich again.

The apology caused as much of a social media firestorm as Dorsey’s initial purchase of the sandwich with one user tweeting “This just shows what a sad world we live in…when a guy feels he has to apologize for eating a chicken sandwich?!” It is, of course, ludicrous for us to start making consumer purchases based on a company’s political beliefs unless they are especially heinous.

If conservatives decided to boycott every company that supported same-sex marriage there is not much they could purchase. Conservatives are happy to use iPhones despite CEO Tim Cook’s sexual orientation and personal politics.

Then enter internet sensation Dave Rubin, an absolute believer in free speech. Rubin who is gay married tweeted out a photo of himself enjoying a Chick-fil-A sandwich to troll the left and to respond to a Huffington Post article which stated that if love LGBTQ people you can’t keeping eating Chick-fil-A.

Chick-fil-A it is important to note has never fired a gay employee or denied service to a gay person and actually states on its website that “the Chick-fil-A culture and service tradition in our Restaurants is to treat every person with honor, dignity and respect –regardless of their belief, race, creed, sexual orientation or gender”.

Rubin originally started out as a stand up comic before transitioning to hosting various podcasts. He defines himself as a classical liberal having drifted away from the left due to rise social justice warriors and other anti-free speech trends. Given how they just shamed a man for enjoying a sandwich you can see why no longer identifies with the left. He was once affiliated with the Young Turks Network.

Now Rubin hosts the highly successful political online discussion program the Rubin Report which as featured as guests everyone from TV stars to YouTube personalities who all have different political philosophies. It has 743k subscribers on YouTube and raises over 30k a month on Patreon.

Rubin’s mocking of the backlash to Jack Dorsey and his subsequent apology sums up this sorry saga. If you ever travel to the US try a Chick-fil-A sandwich and judge the company based on the actual product it sells.
