In news that has caused shock, elation and outrage among fans, acclaimed English actor Idris Elba has been selected to play the lead role of Mulan in the upcoming live action adaptation of the Disney classic.

Mulan tells the story of a young woman who joins the army disguised as a male in order to save her father from the ravenous Mongolian hordes, in the process becoming one of China’s greatest heroines.

While it is uncertain how exactly Idris Elba, a man of colour, could accurately portray Mulan without it being culturally insensitive, it isn’t without precedent.

It’s part of a move by Disney to diversify its cast and rework its repertoire to be more in line with modern progressive values.

Disney CEO Bob Iger took issue with media pressing him on the issue today and was quoted to have said “In a world where a proud woman of colour can portray the role of a stale white man such as was seen in the fantastic Ghostbusters remake, why can’t a man of colour play a role traditionally portrayed by an Asian woman? What are you, some kind of bigot?”

Further plans in the works will see a live action adaptation of Pocahontas played by Danny DeVito and Ariel of The Little Mermaid portrayed by 89 year old Hollywood legend Clint Eastwood.

At press time Elba was heard to remark “Hey, I would rather have played James Bond but I guess this will have to do.”
