Mulan tells the story of a young woman who joins the army disguised as a male in order to save her father from the ravenous Mongolian hordes, in the process becoming one of China’s greatest heroines.

While it is uncertain how exactly casting Idris Elba, a man of colour, could accurately portray Mulan without it being culturally insensitive, it isn’t without precedent.
