Show Description
The Unshackled Waves is proud to present another new episode format, the In Focus Show. This where we bring in an expert on a single topic, so we can all get a better insight into the topic from someone well versed in it. We explore different areas of the topics as well as putting some of our own opinions to the test.
The first expert we have on the show is Kerryn Pholi to discuss Indigenous Welfare. She is a policy and data analyst with 16 years’ experience working in policy communication, public administration, and social work, whose area of expertise is Indigenous Welfare. She has written for the Spectator, Quadrant and The Australian. She has been a contributor to the book Recognize What edited by Gary Johns which was about the proposed constitution recognition of indigenous people and also more recently contributed to the book Making Australia Right edited by James Allan who we had on the podcast previously. Both books were published by our friends at Connor Court Publishing.
We discuss with her all aspects of indigenous welfare and the various challenges in implementing successful public policy in this area. We begin by asking the question why do, despite years of policy and funding, indigenous people still suffer from disadvantage, we ask could the indigenous industry that has emerged over the past 40 years share some of the blame?
Some of the challenges we explore is the damage that identity politics has caused in this area such as the concept of white privilege. We discuss the proposed referendum on recognizing indigenous people in Australia’s Constitution and how it distracts from practical policy in indigenous affairs and could have unintended consequences.
We also explore the controversy around Australia Day and what the day really means, we also analyze 18C of the Racial Discrimination Act and ask if it really protects indigenous people? We then end by discussing some of the more continuous current issues in indigenous affairs such as youth dentition, the effect of the stolen generation on current child welfare policies and whether remote indigenous communities should continue to exist when they suffer from a lack of opportunity.
