The concern is growing over foot and mouth disease potentially coming into Australia following an outbreak in Indonesia. A single case could devastate Australia’s meat industry and see meat prices rise even higher. Opposition Leader Peter Dutton has called for the border with Indonesia to be closed. New Agriculture Minister Murray Watt has boasted about new biosecurity measures rolled out to airports including requiring travelers from Indonesia to walk over sanitation mats.
The World Health Organisation has declared the monkeypox outbreak in western nations a global health emergency of international concern. The declaration was a captain’s call by WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus. 98% of the cases in this outbreak are men who have sex with men, there are 44 confirmed cases currently in Australia. Two monkeypox cases in children in the US were likely infected by household contacts who are men who have sex with men according to CDC Director Rochelle Walensky. Monkeypox spreads mainly via skin-to-skin contact, smallpox vaccines work against monkeypox.
Melton City Councillor Moira Deeming has won Victorian Liberal preselection for the number one spot on the party’s Western Metro Region Upper House ticket for the state election. Moira is pro-life, pro-family, and pro-woman which has already triggered Dan Andrews who called her views unVictorian. Dan’s Health Minister Mary-Anne Thomas called Moira a Bernie Finn clone, Moira’s preselection is rebuked by Liberal members against Leader Matthew Guy’s expulsion of Bernie from the state party room.
Dan Andrews has again refused to resign after a damning joint IBAC and Ombudsman report about Victorian Labor’s misuse of taxpayer-funded staff for party branch stacking activity. Dan also bragged about CommSec declaring Victoria as the best-performing state, the 30,000 Victorians who fled the state during Dan’s lockdowns might disagree.
