Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan confirmed that the cost of the North East Link Motorway which won’t be open until 2028 has blown out from $10 billion 7 years ago to $26 billion. The West Gate Tunnel Motorway cost has blown out from $5.5 billion to $10 billion and is 3 years late in opening in 2025. The only project that will be opening early is the Metro Rail Tunnel next year but its cost still blew out by $2.74 billion. Despite all these cost blowouts the Allan Labor Government still signed the first tunnel boring contract worth $3.6 billion for its Suburban Rail Loop East whose total cost is currently $35 billion and won’t be open until 2035.

Victoria’s Mid-Year Economic and Fiscal Outlook (MYEFO) delivered by Treasurer Tim Pallas has net debt projections at $178 billion by 2027. There is much better news in the Federal MYEFO by Treasurer Jim Chalmers with the deficit for the 2023-24 year only projected to be $1.1 billion increasing expectations of a second surplus. Tim Pallas complained about the lack of federal infrastructure funding for Victoria IN MYEFO. The Allan Government is still involved in pay disputes with various public sector workers including the police.
