Was The Venezuelan Power Crisis Planned In 2010?
Most of Venezuela is still gripped by darkness and as the government scrambles to restore power, people are demanding to know the true cause of this crippling blackout.
Max Blumenthal of the Grayzone Project flexed his conspiracy muscles and shared the idea that Uncle Sam has been behind the power crisis which has entered its 6th day:
“The US-funded CANVAS organization that trained Juan Guaido and his allies produced a 2010 memo on exploiting electricity outages and urged the opposition “to take advantage of the situation…towards their needs”
The memo written by Srdja Popovic of the Center for Applied Non-Violent Action and Strategies (CANVAS), also stressed, that the collapse of the country’s electrical sector could become “a watershed event” that “would likely have the impact of galvanizing public unrest in a way that no opposition group could ever hope to generate”.
Popovic explicitly identified the Simon Bolivar Hydroelectric Plant as a strategic key point. He warned of the “grave possibility that some 70 percent of the country’s electricity grid could go dark as soon as April 2010″.
Popovic urged the opposition to take advantage of the crisis.
The Simon Bolivar Hydroelectric Plant experienced a major collapse last 7 March 2019 with the cause still to be determined.
On the same day, opposition took advantage of the situation and pointed to President Nicolas Maduro as the root cause. Events that unfolded are strikingly similar to Popovic’s memo.
Maduro’s government accused Washington of launching a cyber-attack on its electrical infrastructure. The embattled President said that the power blackout was an act of sabotage by the US in their attempt to remove him from his seat.
Maduro believes that the US is the only country with the technology to cause a blackout in Venezuela.
Kalev Leetaru of Forbes does not discount the possibility of U.S intrusion into Venezuelan politics:
“The United States remotely interfering with [Venezuela’s] power grid is actually quite realistic…timing such an outage to occur at a moment of societal upheaval in a way that delegitimizes the current government, exactly as a government-in-waiting has presented itself as a ready alternative, is actually one of the tactics”.
