The Push for Sharia Law in Australia Is Real
Leftists who respond to critics of Islam in Australia appear to believe we are only concerned with the Islamic terror threat. This is why they always dig up statistics to downplay the likelihood of being killed by terrorism, such as you are more likely to die from falling out of bed in the morning.
Of course, critics of Islam are not just concerned about the increased risk of terrorism in the west. They are concerned about the much more insidious trend of the Islamization of our society, which includes increased crime and sexual assaults and of course Islamic sharia law being practiced in parts of our society. Many European nations have suburbs which are sharia law no go zones for westerners.
The push for Sharia law in Australia is real, Islamists are trying to sell sharia to the Australian people as the harmless practicing of the Muslim faith. Disgraced Australian Islamic activist Yassmin Abdel-Magied wrote in 2014 that sharia law aims to “ensure society lived intelligently and ethically”.
In recent times both sides of politics have rightly dismissed the calls for the accommodation of sharia law in Australia. In response to a submission from the Australian Federation of Islamic Councils in 2011 then Labor Attorney General Robert McClelland firmly stated there is “no place for Sharia Law in Australian society” and that “coming to Australia means obeying Australian laws and upholding Australian values”.
But Islamic activists have ratcheted up their calls for the recognition of sharia law in Australia. It was reported no less than two weeks ago that Sydney University has introduced a new subject called Muslim Minorities and The Law. It argues that aspects of sharia law such as polygamy and lowering of the age of consent could be applied to western legal systems. The course also criticizes the judicial system for denouncing Muslim values during sentencing for criminal offences.
The most recent call for Sharia law to be recognized in Australia comes from a brand new female hijab wearing Muslim activist, psychologist Hanan Dover. She told her Facebook following of over 10,000 that there was nothing wrong with Muslims demanding sharia law because apparently Australian law already recognises “Halacha law for Jews, Canon Law for Catholics, Tribal law for the Aboriginal communities”.
She claimed Muslims were singled out for special criticism “only one of those religious laws creates political and media hysteria because it suits political fear-mongering” and we had “double standards we have to face from politicians / media commentators and bigots”.
It is fair most Australians oppose any type of parallel legal systems operating in Australian society. Aboriginals being subject to different laws and receiving lighter sentences for serious violent and sexual offences to Australians elicit the same objections from the public. With regard to Canon Law, there are not many people who believe that Catholic priests should be able to keep confessions of crime and sex offences secret. Contrary to what Dover claims, Australians don’t have double standards.
Dover based on her other Facebook posts appears to believe that sharia law is only opposed because it is a foreign concept. The reason why it is strongly opposed by many Australians and why we are right to be worried about creeping sharia is because of the way its legal system and Islamic culture treats women, other religions, homosexuals, non-believers and critics of Islam. Dover also posted about the benefits of Islam forbidding alcohol, another aspect of sharia law is that prohibits many recreational activities.
The same Q&A episode which downplayed the risk from Islamic terror also sought to mock a questioner who raised the possibility of sharia law being integrated with our legal system if the Muslim population continues to increase. But when there is an epidemic of female genital mutilation, child brides and growing gender segregation in Australia, and Islamic world leaders calling for Muslims to breed out the West, plus we have the European immigration experiment to look at, concerns about a push for Sharia law are not unfounded.
If we are to be called hysterical by a Muslim activist such as Hanan Dover then so be it. Defending the Australian legal system and western values and freedoms is too important not to be vigilant on. All attempts to justify sharia law should be exposed and condemned, because sharia law does not belong in a country that promotes freedom and morality.
