After only three months as NZ Opposition Leader Chris Luxon has put the National Party in an election-winning lead in the polls. With her popularity waning Jacinda Ardern has announced the border reopening with Australia will be fast-tracked to early April. Vaccine passports are predicted to be scrapped with National also lobbying for all covid restrictions to go. Ardern has agreed to meet with farmers’ rights group Groundswell despite her government previously calling them racist and anti-vax.
Former National Party Leader Simon Bridges has announced he will be retiring from Parliament as the Member for Tauranga. Bridges has criticized the decision of Local Government Minister Nanaia Mahuta for delaying the return for the City of Tuauraga holding council elections until 2024. The city will continue to be run by a government-appointed commissioner.
Morrison’s own Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet embarrassed him with the release of their Women’s Network logo which looked like a cock and balls. Morrison’s Government has also been criticized for only granting disaster relief payments in the Northern NSW floods to those in LGAs in a National Party-held seat. NSW Liberal MLC Catherine Cusack resigned in protest over this decision.
In Victoria, another infectious disease Gonorrhoea has hit the outer suburbs of Melbourne. With the state election at the end of November, the Guardian launched its new Victorian news website with an interview with both Premier Dan Andrews and Opposition Leader Matthew Guy. The South Australian state election is tomorrow with the Labor Opposition predicted to return to government after just one term in Opposition. This state election is unique in that Liberal Premier is a social progressive while Labor leader Peter Malinauskas is a social conservative. It is the last state election until the Federal election which will be held on a Saturday in May. The Labor Federal Opposition is also leading in the polls with leader Anthony Albanese also trying to position himself as a centrist.
