Taking a break from our New Zealand election coverage we have our regular review show to discuss what has been happening in Australia and around the world. To do this we are joined again by Unshackled Contributor Jacob Watts.
The same sex marriage debate seems to be reaching peak lunacy this week with a worker being fired because she openly supported the no campaign. More corporations and sporting bodies have also stated their support for the yes campaign. Given the toxic environment that has now surrounded the debate we express our concerns about how can free speech, free association and freedom of religion be protected if the vote returns a yes? We also highlight the effect of all this as the polls have tightened, yes is still ahead but anything could still happen.
The response to London Tube terror attack by the media and world leaders was typical in avoiding discussion of the problems within Islam. People were more outraged at the tweets Donald Trump sent out after the attack than the fact we saw terror hit the United Kingdom yet again this year. We highlight that this again proves the west needs to change course on immigration and integrating migrants, we also discuss how hollow the cry of Islamophobia is.
We analyze Donald Trump’s foreign policy doctrine which he laid out in his first address to the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday. It is called Principled Realism which encompasses his America First pledge that his foreign policy would protect the sovereignty people of United States but also would work to protect the sovereignty of people of other nations. We conclude that it is trying to strike right balance between neoconservativism and non-interventionism and seeks to place the United States as a more pragmatic world policeman than previous administrations.
A bill to legalize euthanasia has hit Victoria’s Parliament and will be voted on by the end of the year. It has the backing of Premier Daniel Andrews and Health Minister Jill Hennessey. All attempts to legalize euthanasia have failed in state parliaments though this current bill has a serious chance of getting up. We highlight that this push represents a further creeping into Australia of the culture of death. Although protections have been guaranteed that healthy people and interstate travelers won’t be able to receive euthanasia it will have a perverse impact on how we view the most vulnerable in society and how we deal with end of life quality.
