Show Description
Welcome to another In Focus Show. This where we bring in an expert on a single topic, so we can all get a better insight into the topic from someone well versed in it. Our expert for this episode is Dr Alan Moran who is the Founder and Director at Regulation Economics, an Australian think tank promoting economic deregulation. He is also a board member of Australian Environment Foundation, a contributor to Catallaxy Files and has regular op-ed’s published in major newspapers. He was previously Director of the Deregulation Unit at the Institute for Public Affairs for 18 years focusing on energy and environmental issues, he has also advised federal and state governments on energy/competition policy and authored numerous books including his most recent: Climate Change Treaties and Policies in the Trump Era.

The focus of this show is climate change policies. Apologies again for the less than clear audio quality, Australia’s slow internet speeds strike again. We start by asking him where the climate change narrative that is currently told to us came from and to explain how the effects of climate change are overstated and costs of abatement are understated. We then ask him about how the international agreements on climate change work and how they have come to carry so much weight on governments to enact climate change policies. We then discuss some of the consequences of various climate policies on Australia’s economy and living standards and ask are we the worst nation when it comes crippling our economy with these policies?

We then ask him about the recent Finkel Review into Australia’s energy market and what our nation would look like if it were implemented. We also ask him why our leaders feel so pressured to enact these climate policies despite the fact they are causing higher power prices, blackouts and industries moving offshore which the public are not in favor of. We finish off by asking can Trump’s election and his decision to withdraw from the Paris Climate Accord alter the climate change debate and the climate consensus between governments and international bodies who demand action.
