Australia politics finally got colourful again after a pretty dry two weeks dominated by tax policy. This was thanks to a war breaking out between Liberal Democrats Senator David Leyonhjelm and Greens Senator Sarah Hanson-Young. To analyze every twist and turn in this episode I was joined by The Unshackled’s Political Editor Michael Smyth.

It all started when Leyonhjelm heard Hanson-Young say men should stop raping women during a Senate debate about arming women with tasers and pepper spray in the wake of Eurydice Dixon’s murder. Leyonhjelm told her then to stop shagging men. Since then a lot more has been said by Leyonhjelm about Sarah Hanson-Young to the point where she is threatening legal action and other politicians and the media have called on Leyonhjelm to withdraw his comments and apologize. Leyonhjelm has said he has no intention of apologizing and called the Prime Minister a pussy for condemning his conduct.

Leyonhjelm’s conduct has divided opinion amongst his libertarian base however he has gained a great amount of support from those who are fed up with feminism and political correctness. Sarah Hanson-Young is the most hated Greens MP so there is not much sympathy for her in the wider community. Many believe it to be a Trump-style strategy to improve his re-election chances next year. However, given that the right wing minor party vote is already fractured time will tell whether it will pay off. Legal action looks like taking place with both parties start legal GoFundMe’s.
