It has proven to be another turbulent week in Australian politics. To discuss it all we welcome back to the show Editor at Large of The Unshackled Jacob Watts.
The week began with Michael McCormack being elected National Party Leader and Deputy Prime Minister. He beat George Christensen in a leadership ballot with David Gillespie and David Littleproud not contesting. There are still many National MPs upset over Barnaby being pushed out by the Liberals through a series of leaks. Joyce and his supporters have refused to rule out a return to the Nationals leadership. McCormack’s first week performance was okay but has big shoes to fill, his reshuffle of the Nationals frontbench was only very minor. Barnaby’s revelation that he was unsure if he’s the father of Vikki Campion’s child has made this sex scandal drag on even further.
Bill Shorten’s duplicity on the Adani coal mine and workplace laws were exposed this week. Businessman Geoffrey Cousins revealed that Shorten had told him Adani would not go ahead, while Pauline Hanson claimed Shorten had told her he was pro coal. He had also told the CFMEU that he wants to tear up the nation’s workplace laws which were introduced by a Labor Government. However all this was covered up by Michaelia Cash’s brain snap in Senate Estimates where she threatened to reveal rumours about women working in Bill Shorten’s office when being question over her staff by Labor Senator Doug Cameron.
The Tasmanian Election saw the Will Hodgman Liberal Government returned to majority government. It was a just election result and Tasmanian voters made an informed decision to stick with the party who had turned the state’s economic performance around. Labor and Greens complained about pokies money influencing the campaign to cover up their poor performance. It is doubtful that this result has federal implications with Tasmanian Government being quite stable compared to the chaos in Canberra. This election starts off a bumper election year with South Australian election and Batman by-election in two weeks.
It was the 40 anniversary of the degenerate Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras festival and first after same sex marriage passed. It was promoted by major corporations, all the major politicial parties were there including Malcolm Turnbull and New South Wales Liberal Premier Gladys Berejiklian. The most disturbing aspect of this year’s parade was the ABC promoting it to children and Westfield hosting a drag show. The Unshackled has stated it should be banned as it has consistently violated public decency laws. It should at least be at a private stadium and age restricted and it should be highlighted Australia didn’t vote yes to this sort of display of deviancy.
