US “Unmasking Antifa Bill” Needs to Be Replicated in Australia

Antifa, Australian Politics, Regressive Left, Rundown, US Politics

A bill proposed in the United States proposes amending title 18 of the United States Code to make it illegal to commit certain offences while in disguise. The bill was introduced in June, but it received a push from conservative commentator Mike Cernovich and has put it on the map.

The essential idea is to make the act of intimidation, harassment, or violence while covering one’s face illegal and punishable with 15 years in prison. Many US states have laws prohibiting the use of masks or any other type of face covers dating back to the fight against the KKK, however, this bill would increase the penalty standardize the offence across the country.

Australia’s Antifa community has been growing at an alarming rate. They are unapologetic in their use of intimidation and violence to advance a political agenda, also known as terrorism. A similar bill in Australia would effectively mean the treatment of violent Antifa protesters as criminals and hopefully, encourage protesters to engage in peaceful protests with their face showing as opposed to the intimidating and violent tactics we see today.
