It has long been known that Rex Tillerson and Donald Trump were not looking eye to eye on a lot of issues, and the departure of Rex Tillerson was a long time coming. However, no one would expect that Trump would choose Twitter as a proxy to fire his secretary of state.
Reports show that Rex Tillerson was not privy to his firing before Donald Trump’s tweet and learned from it only once he saw the aforementioned tweet. This draws similarities to when James Comey was fired, having not been told directly by the president and rather being informed by a television screen he initially thought was a gag.
Many are drawing conclusions that Rex was fired because he agrees with the UK’s assertion that Russia was behind the recent poisoning of a British spy on UK soil, but this seems to carry no weight to it. While Trump seems to have been less tough on Russia than was initially thought, Rex Tillerson was on his way out in a very public way for several months.
