elected greens Faruqi and shoebridge

Three elected Greens members of the NSW Upper house, three Greens MPs one current Senator and one former Senator have all come out in support of a campaign organised by a Trotskyist group unhappy that COVID-19 protest restrictions apply to them as well as to normal people.

The Following elected Greens pollies have put their names to the “Democracy is Essential” campaign:

  • David Shoebridge, NSW Greens MLC
  • Mehreen Faruqi, Greens Senator for NSW
  • Lee Rhiannon, Former Greens Senator for NSW
  • Jenny Leong MP, Greens Member for Newtown
  • Jamie Parker MP, Greens Member for Balmain
  • Tamara Smith MP, Greens Member for Ballina
  • Abigail Boyd, Greens MLC
  • Cate Faehrman, Greens MLC
  • Jonathan Sri, Greens Brisbane City Councillor.

Not content with merely being signatories Greens MLC David Shoebridge and former Greens Senator Lee Rhiannon will be featured speakers at the new organisation’s campaign launch this Wednesday alongside organiser and National Union of Students “Anti-Racism Officer” Vinil Kumar.

Vinil Kumar has since 2014 been an activist with revolutionary Trotskyist group Socialist Alternative, has written for the Socialist Alternative newspaper Red Flag and was elected to his NUS position under the Socialist Alternative banner.

The two major events the “Democracy is Essential” campaign is complaining about are the NSW police arrest of veteran Marxist activist Paddy Gibson in late July and the breaking up of a Marxist protest at the University of Sydney in early August.

Also publicly signing on to this campaign alongside the elected Greens are:

Jeff Sparrow and Mick Armstrong the founders of Socialist Alternative, Tom Ballard former ABC host accused rapist and supporter of Socialist Alternative electoral front “Victorian Socialists”, Nick Riemer of the revolutionary Trotskyist group Solidarity. Rowan Cahill former member of the editorial board of Australian Left Review the journal of the Communist Party of Australia, and Carole Ferrier one of the original founders of the International Socialist Tendency in Australia.

Other Socialist Alternative members and organisers named in the campaign include Rick Kuhn, Tom Bramble, Cat Rose, April Holcombe, Natalie Acreman, Chloe Rafferty, Alma Torlakovic, Liam Ward, Katie Wood, Shovan Bhattarai, James Morched, Gavin Stanbrook, Jack Mansell, Madeleine Clark, Lily Campbell, Beth Jackson, Deaglan Godwin, Grace Bowskill, Robin Pierson, Darcy Turner, Grace Hill, Erin Russell, Nicole McEwen, Scott Harney, Hayden Walsh, Damian Ridgwell, Moira Nolan, Kaye Broadbent, Helen Jarvis, Dylan Tomasi, Kate Doherty, Nahui Ludekens, Liz Walsh, Van T Rudd (the former PMs nephew), Jordan Humphreys, Josh Lees, Eleanor Morley, Hersha Kadkol, Jerome Small and Liz Ross as well as former members Daniel Lopez and Liam Donohoe.

Keen readers may be detecting a theme.

To round out the numbers with a few from Australia’s smaller Trotskyist groups Robin Mayo and Rachael Evans of the Socialist Alliance and Janet Burstall of Workers’ Liberty signed up as well.

It’s worth pointing out that this is far from the first time these elected Greens have campaigned with extremists.

Jamie Parker of the Greens speaking at an event in support of the PKK, a group designated as a terrorist organisation by the Australian government.

Jamie Parker has a list of connections to Anarchists, Marxists and supporters of the Kurdish terrorist group PKK that stretch for thirty paragraphs.

Lee Rhiannon was the last editor of the openly Stalinist newspaper of the Socialist Party of Australia, studied how to subvert western societies in the Soviet Union, had an ASIO file before she hit high school and may have actually been a Soviet spy. While not currently an elected Green she remains a figurehead for the increasingly openly Marxist faction of the party.

Mehreen Faruqi has been caught speaking alongside Socialist Alternative speakers and supporting Socialist Alternative front groups on a multitude of occasions.

Brisbane Councillor Jonathan sri
Jonathan Sri. Hes a little weird.

Jonathan Sri only last week helped organise a mob of vandals who defaced the front of QLD police headquarters and has been the front man for the Solidarity and Socialist Alternative led Kangaroo Point “Refugee” protests.

Jenny Leong is better known as the woman who attended a candlelit vigil for baboons, but she also associated with a primate of a different type when welcoming Solidarity’s Paddy Gibson into NSW Parliament as her guest alongside David Shoebridge.

And of course David Shoebridge takes the cake as the Greens representative with the most connections to the largest variety of Marxist extremist groups; which considering that he’s competing for this dubious honour not only with those mentioned above but with national Greens leader Adam Bandt (who led the Marxist student coalition “Left Alliance” in his uni days) is quite a feat.

The idea that these professional politicians, some of whom have spent an entire lifetime either on the fringes (and often more than the fringes) of left wing extremism in Australia, wouldn’t know that the campaign they were being asked to support and speak on behalf of was being organised by the largest left wing extremist group in Australia is beyond credibility. During the 2017-2018 NSW Greens civil war MP Cate Faehrman was openly complaining to the media about some of these same Marxist groups she now apparently supports. Less than two years ago Faehrman stated:

“It is my firm belief that the party in NSW has been infiltrated by destructive extreme left forces who will stop at nothing to weaken those in the party, like myself… who want nothing more than to make a difference for the planet, our climate and our future”

What a difference a little time makes. Now Cate is seemingly in bed with some of those exact same people.

So why do theses elected Greens think it’s acceptable to campaign on behalf of people who want to overthrow the government and implement a totalitarian state?

The answer it seems, is because they can. No major media outlets ever call out the Greens on their extremist links, while relentlessly attacking politicians on the right like Ian Goodenough and Andrew Hastie because they may have once been in the crowd at a protest also attended by Neil Erikson.

The hypocrisy and double standards are so blatant as to be mystifying. Mystifying at least until you remember that these elected Greens pollies, the journalists who report on them, and the red extremists all went to the same universities. In fact a not inconsiderable percentage of the extremists named above are current or former academics. To them falls the task of teaching the next generation of budding journalists to not only ignore but to applaud the extremism of the left. And it seems they’re doing a very good job.
