BREAKING: The Death of Australia’s Mainstream Media Begins

9

We started The Unshackled with the aim of replacing the mainstream media. We saw them continue to push a leftist agenda, sneer at the Australian people and constantly peddle fake news. They needed to be called out and ordinary people needed a voice. We had seen how the alternative media helped overcome the bias of the mainstream media in the United States to catapult Donald Trump to the Presidency.

Global trends do take a while to reach Australia, but we predicted the death of Australia’s mainstream media was on the horizon and events of the past week have now confirmed that death is underway. It started with the announcement last Friday that Network Ten had posted at $232.2 million loss for the first half of 2016-17. The network only stayed afloat thanks to a generous loan from the Commonwealth Bank.

But today’s announcement that Fairfax Media would be cutting 125 editorial jobs from their newsrooms, which is around a quarter of their staff. This follows the company taking a $1 billion write down last financial year. The main factor is the loss of advertising revenue which is drying up throughout the internet as it is absorbed by the tech giants Google and Facebook.

Many on the right do take some satisfaction in Fairfax’s demise, especially given the fake news they have reported about us. But we should not forget the human element that 125 people will lose their jobs, regardless of what we think of their performance as journalists growing unemployment is always unpleasant. But this is the reality of digital disruption and the new media landscape, Fairfax simply failed to adapt. Not only that, Fairfax failed to stay true to common sense and display any form of intelligence. A week-long strike by their journalists will not prevent the inventible economic reality for the company

The fact its newspapers were aimed at inner city working professionals, only a small fraction of the Australia population, meant they always suffered from a lack of circulation. This, along with the fact that more people are getting their news from the internet, only made things even more dire. Even in the internet news market Fairfax had trouble competing. This is probably because there are over 100 left wing news websites. The Guardian, BuzzFeed, HuffPost, Mamamia, New Matilda, Crikey and Junkee to name a few. Of course, it doesn’t help when the government provides over $1 billion to fund a left wing media organisation that offers all its content for free in the form of the ABC.

The fact that the leftist media field is so crowded, spreading advertising revenue very thinly has resulted in sites such as The Guardian now offering premium memberships to readers to stay afloat. But the main reason why many of these news media companies are struggling is because they refuse to offer what the majority of people want: real news that doesn’t push a progressive agenda, that omits facts and ignores the working population’s opinions on issues such as immigration, free speech and political correctness.

This is why The Unshackled and our friends, largely made up of ordinary citizens, have found it necessary to fill the gap in the market. The media is important because it influences the decisions of our politicians the most. This is why we have even a conservative government refusing to tackle the big issues that ordinary people are concerned about. There needs to be a voice for the voiceless. The only mainstream conservative news source is News Corp Australia, but as the sacking of Mark Latham showed even they are not immune to leftist influence and have announced their own redundancies just a few months ago. It is widely predicted that when Rupert Murdoch dies his sons will not follow the same editorial direction, which has already been demonstrated by the recent clear-out at Fox News.

Fairfax is failing not just because of an outdated business model, but because ordinary people have had it with their biased journalism. Meanwhile sites like The Unshackled and overseas players such as Breitbart have continue to grow because we provide news that is ignored by the mainstream, are fearlessly independent and provide a platform to those who nearly always ignored. The media revolution has now begun in Australia and it is about time for the truth to take over.
