Jacinta Price has confirmed she will seek preselection to stand as the Country Liberal Party candidate for the federal seat of Lingiari at the next federal election due either at the end of 2018 or the beginning of 2019. Price set out her intention via a phone interview with Sky News’ Northern Australia correspondent Matt Cunningham.

Jacinta Price is currently a Councillor for Alice Springs and was easily re-elected at council elections last year when she ran under the ticket of current Mayor Damien Ryan. During the past year she has built up a national profile campaigning for greater action to end domestic violence and child abuse in remote indigenous communities as well as taking a stand against the left’s hijacking of indigenous issues and politics of division.

She was most recently the face of the successful Save Australia Day campaign launched by Mark Latham’s Outsiders which helped to counter the left’s unprecedented assault on our national day this year.

While her advocacy has made her a target of abuse from the left upset that she doesn’t toe their view on how indigenous people should think she has gained a substantial national following with her Facebook page now at over 33,000 likes.

Both her media performances and personal courage in her campaigning has led to speculation she may run for federal politics. Her mother Bess Price was a Country Liberal Party Territory Government Minister from 2012 to 2016.

While there is still the internal preselection process for the Country Liberal Party to go through given both the grassroots support and from senior Coalition figures she has attracted she is all but certain to be the party’s candidate.

The Division of Lingiari was created at the 2001 federal election and takes in all of the Northern Territory apart from Darwin. Labor’s Warren Snowden has been the member throughout the seat’s entire existence. He only came close to losing it during the Coalition’s landslide election victory of 2013. It will be a big ask for Price to win that seat, but if anybody has a chance for the CLP it is her.

Snowden has already indicated despite first entering the federal parliament in 1987 he will recontest the seat at the next election setting up one of the nation’s most high profile contests.
