Ellen Sandell MP

Earlier this month Melbourne Greens MP Ellen Sandell was the featured speaker at a violent rally organised by the Revolutionary Marxist group Socialist Alternative (SAlt).

On May 8th the Socialist Alternative front group “Campaign Against Racism and Fascism” (CARF) which notoriously incited a riot outside the Flemington event of Milo Yiannopoulos in December 2017 held a rally demanding the release of 35 detainees who are being held in Melbourne’s Park Hotel after sneaking into the country under the now discontinued “Medevac” scheme.

About 150 protesters confronted a police line that was preventing them from attacking the hotel with multiple bodies being thrown to the ground. While this distraction was underway other members of the crowd surged around the back of the police who were forced to retreat. Socialist Alternative has previously had even other pro-“refugee” groups distance themselves from their events due to SAlt activists breaking windows at the Park Hotel at another event in late March.

Speakers at the event included Nahui Ludekens of Socialist Alternative, Omar Hassan of Socialist Alternative (notable for organising violent protests in Sydney against Reclaim Australia and Bettina Arndt), and Madeline Ha of Socialist Alternative (famous for being humiliated by Avi Yemini). Also leading the march were Claudio Uribe of Socialist Alternative, Jerome Small of Socialist Alternative and Liz Walsh of Socialist Alternative.

Keen eyed observers will be noticing a trend.

But apparently Greens MP Ellen Sandell did not notice anything at all. For Ellen none of this raised any red flags. Even as she marched alongside a sea of red flags and massive banners with “Socialist Alternative” on them. She even left a message of thanks to the “Campaign Against Racism and Fascism” on her Facebook page.

SAlt openly states that they are a revolutionary Trotskyist group that wants to overthrow the governments of Australia via extra-parliamentary means and implement a totalitarian socialist state. If they are not an extremist group then nobody in Australia can be classified as such. The idea that Ellen Sandell did not know who they are or what they stand for is not credible. Which means that Ms Sandell feels entirely comfortable being the featured speaker at an event for an extremist group that wants to overthrow the parliament in which she sits.

Which is worrying to be honest.
