Yassmin Abdel-Magied after trolling Australians for the past 6 months is now asking what it would take to be forgiven and to be accepted as an Australian. She still believes the only wrong she has done by Australia was her 2017 ANZAC Day post Lest We Forget (Manus, Nauru, Syria, Palestine…). This is what she has told the Guilty Feminist Podcast in her most recent media appearance.

She claimed during her life she did everything she could to be the model minority “I was Young Australian of the Year for my state… I graduated First Class Honours for mechanical engineering. I’ve got more awards than I could crap out. I could not remember the number of boards and councils that I volunteered on. I could not have been more of a model minority”.

But said the problems arose because “They didn’t realise that a brown Muslim woman had opinions. Or that a brown Muslim woman might say something that was a little bit confronting. And the moment she did, they completely flipped. Completely”.

The problems Australians had with what Yassmin had to say were not because she simply had an opinion or were confined to just that one social media post, but her views were factually incorrect and she insulted much of Australian life and its institutions. Even before her ANZAC Day post, she was widely criticised for claiming on the ABC’s Q&A program that Islam is the most feminist religion and sharia law simply meant following the law of the land. Those women subjected to female genital mutilation, forced marriages and forced to cover their bodies in sharia law governed nations would disagree.

Her ANZAC Day post had the effect of seeing her views and influence more closely scrutinized, it was in the public interest given she was then hosting Australia Wide on the ABC (which was later axed) and was paid by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade to travel to the Middle East to promote her autobiography and sell Australia as a Muslim friendly country, she also sat on the department’s Council for Australian-Arab Relations.

This closer scrutiny led to it being revealed she told a leadership forum that Australians needed to accept that they lived on stolen land and agreed western style democracy may not be the best form of government because it is not inclusive of minority groups. She also made the ludicrous claim that cultural diversity in engineering could have prevented the environmental disaster of the 2010 BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

The scrutiny became too much for Yassmin where she fled for the UK where she resides now. In this podcast, Yassmin states that she worked with a therapist before her departure and that “I genuinely do not think I would have survived if I’d stayed in Australia”. It is not clear what she means by that, did she fear for her safety in Australia?”

Yassmin also reinforced that she felt betrayed by Australia “People tell me that I should have faith in the system, that things will work, that you should just work hard enough. Bullshit. I worked harder than anyone ever could. I was 16 when I started a youth organisation. I was 24 when I published my first book”. This comment, of course, overlooks the fact that she insulted Australians again with another Lest We Forget tweet on Remembrance Day and told us to enjoy our free speech and stolen land. Not exactly extending the olive branch.

Yassmin made the news again last month when the ABC announced her return as the host of a new hijab fashion show and she was denied entry to the United States because she planned to partake in paid speaking engagements on a tourist visa. Despite her not having the right paperwork she claimed she was targeted by the US authorities because she wasn’t a privileged straight white male.

Despite claiming “people with institutional power” have not defended her she would appear to be making a handsome living from enough people with power and money willing to hear about what an oppressed victim she is from evil white patriarchal Australia. She is also not having much trouble gaining interviews and features with sympathetic media outlets. As long as Yassmin continues to behave as a victim and make snide insults on social media she will never gain the forgiveness she claims to seek.
