Did greenies cause the Gippsland Bushfires?

Since the revelation yesterday that ABC Gippsland may have been trying to cover up their promotion of a green group opposed to hazard reduction burns many on the right of politics have been wondering about the culpability of these groups in the deadly fires now wracking the region.

So here’s the facts:

Gippsland fires
Gippsland fires. Rather nasty.

From at least May 2018 until October 2019 the Gippsland Environment Group organised protests and co-ordinated lobbying against planned hazard reduction burns by the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning. Due to this lobbying (almost applauded at the time by the local ABC) the area to be burned for bushfire protection was reduced from 370 hectares to only 9. The Gippsland Environment Group justified this intervention on the basis that the low fire risk seasons when preventative burns are carried out are also nesting seasons for birds, that the smoke from hazard reduction burns is a health hazard, and that burning to reduce fuel and leaf litter destroys animal habitats.

Gippsland greenies protest against fuel reduction burns last May. Thanks guys.

As you may have noticed from the news, large parts of Gippsland are now on fire.

It’s important not to jump to conclusions. With every leftist on social media screaming that Scott Morrison needs to be removed by the Governor General for being a pee-pee-poo head it’s more important than ever to remain calm and rational. Many of the areas that were “saved” from preventative burning by the Gippsland Environment Group are not the areas where the worst blazes are currently burning. The current situation is a failure of state and local government decades in the making, and considering the Black Saturday disaster of only ten years ago an unforgivable one. We should have learnt our lesson about the need for preventative burning after that awful day caused 170 Victorians to lose their lives. Apparently we all needed further instruction.

“Our ABC” cheered them all the way.

But that said some of the areas currently at high risk are areas the Gippsland Environmental Group “saved”. They shouldn’t be let off the hook and nor should the ABC for uncritically promoting their cause and their spokesman.

In particular it needs to be asked why nobody bothered to notice that Gippsland Environment Group President John Hermans represented the group in endorsing the 2011 ”Climate Action Summit” alongside Socialist Alliance member Dave Kerin, Socialist Alliance member Aron Micallef, Socialist Alliance member Ben Courtice, David McKnight (the former editor of the newspaper of the Communist Party of Australia) as well as the SEARCH Foundation (the actual successor group to the Communist Party of Australia).

“The people, United! Will endanger our neighbours!”

Funny nobody thought it was worth their while to mention any of this isn’t it? Also funny that Environment Victoria promoted the Gippsland Environment Group on their website.

Did greenies cause the Gippsland Bushfires? No that was mostly arsonists, but the greenies and their Marxist mates certainly didn’t help.
