On this week’s review show we discuss another busy news week. To do this we are joined again by Unshackled Contributor Jacob Watts.

Many thought the dual citizenship saga was over with the High Court ruling last however the with the court stating that ignorance of citizenship was not a defense it opened the possibility of more MPs being found ineligible to sit in Parliament. This week the President of the Senate Stephen Parry resigned after revealing he held British citizenship by descent. We later learned he told Mitch Fifield and several other Liberal MPs but was instructed  keep quiet until after the High Court ruling. It has renewed calls for an audit of the citizenship of all MPs which the government is resisting as they fear they will lose more MPs and the government will fall. We agree that the longer they resist an audit the further they erode public trust in our political system. Politicians are supposed to make laws we are all meant to follow, but are breaking our most basic law in the Constitution.

There was another lone wolf vehicle Islamic terror attack in the west, this time in New York City. The perpetrator was 32 year old Sayfullo Saipov a Muslim from Uzbekistan who killed 8 and injured 11 when he drove pick up truck onto a bike path. He was in the United States on a Diversity Immigrant Visa, an ill-conceived immigration category which President Trump has now abolished. We conclude that this attack has proven Donald Trump correct in his actions to more strictly control immigration to the United States which included his proposed travel ban.

The Queensland election has finally confirmed for Saturday 25th November 2017, it is shaping up to be a three way race between the Labor Government, Liberal National Party and One Nation. Both Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk and Tim Nicholls trying to ignore the One Nation factor who based on current polling could hold the balance of power post election. Both leaders are making very vague commitments, although Palaszczuk has proven to be a competent Premier she still supports a 50% renewable energy target and has overseen the growth of the public service. We agree that Tim Nicholls is hardly an inspiring leader and is trying to play it safe with the LNP still spooked from its shock loss under Campbell Newman last election despite holding a massive majority, this means that issues such as the state debt are being ignored.

The federal government closed Manus Island detention centre this week, despite giving plenty of warning the 600 men located there are refusing to leave claiming it is not safe in Papua New Guinea. It is strange after claiming they wanted to leave the centre are now wanting to stay, but this is no more than other stunt by them and refugee advocates protesting back in Australia to make the government appear cruel. The government to its credit are remaining firm that anyone who comes to Australia by boat will never come here and any weakness on border policy will see the boats will return.
