Show Description
On this week’s review show we are joined once again by Co-Editor in Chief of The Unshackled Sukith Fernando. We begin by reflecting on the outcome of the just passed United Kingdom general election which resulted in a hung parliament but the Conservatives being the largest party. We highlight the poor result is due to Theresa May failing to campaign on issues that are her party’s strengths, such as Brexit, immigration and terrorism. Meanwhile Labour and Jeremy Corbyn campaigned on their strengths such as income equality and public services. May came across as detached while Corbyn came across as genuine. We point out May’s campaign had similarities to Malcolm Turnbull’s last year where he nearly lost his majority as both leaders and had betrayed their conservative base. The only silver lining it seems is that the Conservatives will now be in a Coalition with the Democratic Unionist Party of Northern Ireland who are genuine conservatives, but Islam and terrorism don’t look like being solved for the British anytime soon.

Australian politics has been dominated the past week by the release of the Independent Review into the Future Security of the National Electricity Market by Australia’s Chief Scientist Dr Alan Finkel which recommended Australia adopt a Clean Energy Target. It is apparently different from a Renewable Energy Target but will still see our reliance on renewables increase and therefore power prices as well. We express our frustrations that the Turnbull government is expected to just accept the report’s recommendations by the media and the political class and ask why can’t they just ignore it? We highlight that Trump showed that you can run for office as a climate skeptic and reverse climate change programs so there is no reason why same can be done by our leaders here.

We also express our disgust at the Australian government paying out asylum seekers on Manus Island $70 million in compensation for alleged psychological and physical abuse. We point out that this rewards people coming to Australia illegally, the detainees were free to go home at anytime and the riots which caused injury were started by the detainees themselves. We express our belief that this damages Australia’s border security and could potentially see the people smuggling trade resume since previous arrivals have just won a pot of taxpayers’ money.

We also comment on the continuing circus of the Trump-Russia collusion conspiracy, which in the past week has involved both former FBI Director James Comey and Attorney-General Jeff Sessions testifying before congressional committees. We highlight that there is still no smoking gun to prove the Russia collusion accusation and that Comey’s testimony only amounted to him saying how much he didn’t like Trump. Trump has stated himself that there is still no evidence of collusion or obstruction of justice and that he is happy to testify himself. Nevertheless we predict that the this persecution of Trump will continue and don’t know how far it will go.
