It was a week of both tragic and optimistic news. To discuss it I was joined by the Unshackled’s new Political Editor Michael Smyth.

This week saw Australia commemorate its past and present defence personnel with ANZAC Day on April 25th. The day is as big as Australia Day in terms of national significance, which means it is another target of left’s abuse and protest. The left believes the day glorifies war and does not recognise Aboriginals who died in the Frontier Wars. Leftists who made a special effort to insult ANZAC this year were alleged comedian Catharine Devaney, Father Rod Bowers, Sally Rugg a former campaign director at GetUp, they followed in the footsteps of Yassmin Abdel-Magied’s Lest We Forget tweet last year. ANZAC services and marches needed extra security this year which demonstrates that the freedom the diggers died for is sadly being eroded.

Late ANZAC Day it was revealed Treasurer Scott Morrison would scrap 0.5% increase in Medicare Levy in this year’s budget which would have raised $8 billion to pay for the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). Morrison claimed he found the revenue and savings elsewhere, the scheme will cost $22 billion a year and need 50,000 employees. It was one of the spending commitments locked in by the Gillard Government and given the size of its funding it is likely we are going to see rorts and misspending allocations.

The world was heartbroken by the tragedy of British infant Alfie Evans who died after his life support was withdrawn against the wishes of his parents. He had been struck down with an undiagnosed neurodegenerative disorder which left him in a semi-vegetative state. The British government-run National Health Service and the courts appeared to everything they could to make sure Alfie died including denying his parents request to take him to Italy for treatment. The case is an example of how the culture of death is now pervading the west, the pitfalls of socialised medicine and the further erosion of parental rights.

Peace on the Korean Peninsula is now a real possibility with a historic meeting between North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un and South Korean President Moon Jae-in in the demilitarized zone between the two countries. This follows North Korea’s pledge to denuclearise and negotiate an end to the Korean War. A lot of the credit has to go to United States President Donald Trump whose strong arm tactics and unpredictability has called North Korea’s bluff on their nuclear threats, the meeting between Trump and Kim Jong-un is due to take place in June. However, this conflict won’t be resolved until the North Korean people are free from the terror and poverty of communism.
