War on the Salvos This Christmas

Sometimes you cannot be charitable enough in the eyes of the Left, especially if your charity is based on the Christian faith. This is something that the Salvation Army is realizing this Christmas with a campaign by leftist activists to urge Australians not to give donations to their Christmas appeal. Despite being a charity which would appear to strive towards the beloved progressive goal of social justice, it still doesn’t tick all the boxes demanded of today’s warriors of the far left.

Government charity, or as it is commonly referred to as welfare, does not solve poverty in our society nor is it moral. Welfare is funded by involuntary payments from taxpayers based on their earned income. The distribution of welfare, although directed to those less fortunate most of the time, confers no mutual obligations on recipients to improve their life situation, its case of government hands over the money with no follow up or questions asked.

However private charities rely on voluntary donations which means not only do charities have to show results to continue to receive donations but they are often hands on working with the disadvantaged and providing tailored care. Donating to charity or volunteering is entirely consistent with libertarian and conservative principles as both ideologies believe in a strong civil society

The Salvos already have a black mark against their name due to being an unashamedly Christian faith-based charity, they do not belong however to any particular denomination. Its mission states ‘The Salvation Army is a Christian movement dedicated to sharing the love of Jesus’ which to the left immediately screams of religious indoctrination. This in turn shapes its values which are listed as Integrity, Compassion, Respect, Diversity and Collaboration’ and a commitment to ‘Australia and its people, seeking reconciliation, unity and equity’. However to most people this would still appear a very wholesome message.

Of course these are just the words on their website, it is through their actions in local communities throughout Australia that what we should judge the Salvation Army. Its services include, but of course are not limited to, providing accommodation and housing, helping those with substance addiction, financial assistance and youth services. Of course we are all familiar with the Salvos Stores which generate much of their funds as well as their annual Red Shield Appeal. They also provide disaster relief both here and overseas.

So with all of this chartable activity, including hundreds of success stories of helping people overcoming adversity what have they done that’s so horrible in the eyes of the left? Well because the employees in different branches of the organisation referred to as Salvationists are bound to a Biblical code of ethics. This includes abstaining from tobacco, drugs, gambling and pornography and protecting the sanctity of marriage and family life. You can probably tell where the objection comes from now.

It is from the precious LGBT lobby who in 2016 believe that everything revolves around them and that total acceptance of their lifestyle must be demanded and expected from all. The Bible is pretty clear on the sinfulness of homosexual relations, and the Salvation Army is not alone in this Biblical interpretation. However it should be noted that this position on LGBT issues is only for the hiring of their staff. In its provision of services, which is of course the part that matters, most it does not discriminate against anyone. It is also worth noting that it their effort to appear more LGBT friendly they temporarily put their support behind the controversial Safe Schools Program before backing away once fully aware the programs real purpose. But this is not good enough for today’s militant LGBT activists, which is why several of them now have a called for a boycott.

Another absurd reason in advocating for a boycott of the Salvation Army is that they are not sex positive? What does that mean? Well they try and help sex workers leave the industry and that apparently stigmatises those people who choose to be sex workers. I am sure there are many people who do actively choose it, but it cannot be denied that many are forced into it due to tragic life circumstances and do not enjoy doing it. So why shouldn’t the Salvation Army help give those the option of leaving the industry. It is the peak of political correctness to prevent laying down the facts that maybe being a sex worker is not the best or safest career to be in.

It should however be noted that their Salvation Army’s record is not perfect as it has been the subject of numerous abuse allegations from people under their care over the years, which was highlighted by the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse, including allegations they underpaid compensation to victims. But of course these events are contrary to the mission and values of the organisation and should suddenly invalidate all the good the organisation has done over the years.

It is a horrendous blight on our civil society that left wing activists are seeking to undermine one of Australia’s most beneficial and enduring charities because they disagree with some of their moral positions. It also shows the deep hatred for Christianity the left has that such a charity such as the Salvation Army is somehow empowering its influence when all the people in the organisation want to do is help their fellow man. So please consider donating to Salvation Army this Christmas and don’t let the left continue to tear down our important institutions.

I think supporting an organisation that has been named in the Royal Commission into Institutionalised Child Sex Abuse is fair. It’s not just Salvation Army’s attitudes to members of the LGBTI community, it’s their stigmatising of drug users, sex workers and single mothers as well, not to mention their past in sexually abuse of children. Charity should not involve proselytising, something that Salvation Army are active in doing.

Don’t support the Salvos because they’re Christian??? No worries. I’m sure the poor and needy will be delighted to be fed on acceptable transgender pronouns and why they should care deeply for a bunch of perverts rather than actual food…
