After championing the cause of homosexuals, then transgender people, the progressives have moved onto fighting for the rights of non-binary people and promoting the theory of gender fluidity. Being non-binary does not require a formal gender transition involving medical body modification or adhering to a certain sexual lifestyle, anyone can simply declare themselves to be any of hundreds of non-binary genders and demand that others respect their special non-binary pronoun.

The degree to which non-binary genders have spread in the social justice scene is that before addressing someone you must ask what their proffered pronoun is and must never assume someone’s gender despite what they look like. In a free society of course if a person wants to identify as whatever that is their business, but nobody else is under any obligation to respect that. This was the argument that helped catapult Dr Jordan Peterson to fame.

It is one thing for the non-binary trend to exist in a certain segment of society, but it’s another thing for the government to provide legal validation of someone’s made up gender. Government authorities having a record of a person’s biological gender is still important for people such as medical practitioners and when providing gender-specific health services. But there is now a push by the LGBT lobby and their allies to have governments amend birth certificates to list a non-binary gender.

Now they have a new obliging jurisdiction in Ontario, Canada which just issued its first non-binary birth certificate. Joshua Ferguson petitioned the Ontario government to have the gender on their birth certificate changed from male to non-binary. Ferguson stated that having non-binary listed as their gender they said would better reflect their identity.

Already in Ontario, Canada all you need to change your legal gender is a gender identity certificate from a doctor. The ease at which is system can be manipulated was exposed by Lauren Southern in 2016 when she worked for Rebel Media. Southern presented herself at a local doctor claiming she had gender dysphoria and then turned up at the Ontario government offices to change her legal gender to male.

Surprisingly Ontario, Canada is not the first justification to accommodate such a request. Another province in Canada Newfoundland and Labrador accommodated a request by a transgender activist to have a non-binary birth certificate issued. Canada has also become infamous for its Bill C-16 which made it illegal to address someone using the wrong pronoun Last year

California last year passed legislation to allow for non-binary as an option for birth certificates. California also passed legislation forcing aged care workers to use residents’ correct pronouns under the threat of jail time.

If you think such legal accommodation of made up genders is confined to progressive utopias such as Canada and California there is a push to have similar legislation passed in Australian states. In Victoria, in 2016 the Andrews Government attempted to pass legislation that would have allowed anyone to change the gender on their birth certificate to anything for any reason, and they could keep changing it every six months. It was thankfully blocked in the state’s Upper House.

In Queensland, the recently re-elected Palaszczuk Labor Government is conducting a review of the state’s  Births, Deaths and Marriages Registration Act 2003 (Qld). As part of the review, the Government released the Recognising sex and gender diversity and same-sex families discussion paper

This paper thought it worthy of consideration if non-binary should be an option on birth certificates. This would not just be available for those identifying as non-binary but would also allow parents who wanted to raise their child gender neutral to not have a biological gender listed from the day they are born. It also proposed removing the requirements for transgender people to undergo sex reassignment surgery to change their legal gender.

Ontario, Canada will certainly not be the last jurisdiction to start issuing non-binary birth certificates based on the current trends. Meanwhile, the confusion for the rest of the population, particularly the health system will increase.
