Julian Assange and Russian Interference: The Delegitimization of the 2016 Election

After Julian Assange went silent in mid October, alongside the activation of his “dead man’s switch” and many rumors, many had feared the worst for the founder of WikiLeaks. Luckily, Assange has shown himself to be alive and well in his interview with Fox News’ Sean Hannity. The interview was aired on January 3rd, 2017 and gives us much more insight into recent claims of Russian hacking and interference in the 2016 presidential election.

Assange continues to confirm that Russia is indeed not the source of the Clinton and Podesta email leaks, stating that “Our source is not the Russian government and it is not a state party”. When asked if President Obama is lying to the American people he points out that President Obama hasn’t really been lying, but rather “acting like a lawyer”,  stating that the President “doesn’t say WikiLeaks obtained its information from Russia, worked with Russia, et cetera…”. Assange seems to imply heavily that our own President is trying to mislead the American people. Now, why would the President try to do such a thing? The answer has become very clear – To delegitimize Donald Trump’s election.

For years, foreign adversaries have directed cyberattacks at America’s physical, economic, and military infrastructure, while stealing our intellectual property. Now our democratic institutions have been targeted. Recent reports of Russian interference in our election should alarm every American.” – Senate Joint Statement (11-12-16)

Assange addresses this later in the interview, saying that the dramatic accusations against Russia are designed to “say that President-elect Trump is not a legitimate president”. He then immediately warns us that the left “will seize on this and harp on it for the next four years”.

It seems very clear what the democratic party’s game plan will be – to cry unfairness and complain that Trump did not win the presidency legitimately. My predictions are that we will be able to look forward to the left constantly reminding us that President-elect Trump would not have won if it hadn’t been for “Russian hacking”. However, the left has done nothing but attempt to smear and delegitimize Donald Trump since the beginning of his campaign and, time and time again, he has been shown to rise above the left’s bullying. They are desperately trying to soften the blow of the incoming Trump election, but perhaps they need a new game-plan.
