Insurance agencies generate rates based on a variety of factors, one of which is gender. Insuring women happens to be less risky than insuring men, so one 20-year-old Canadian man changed his gender to save on his car insurance.
According to CBS, the man did this after learning that his insurance would be around $1,200 cheaper if he was a woman. He told the woman on the phone he identified as a woman but was not given the cheaper rate. It was when he went to the doctor to get a document that re-affirmed that he identified as a woman that the insurance agency provided the 20-year old with the cheaper rate.
He admits that he did it for the savings, though not everyone is taking this so lightly. A Member of the Legislative Assembly, Stephanie McLean, claimed what the young man had done was a crime in a tweet.
Alberta man admits to Perjury – “changes gender on government IDs for cheaper car insurance.” He thinks he’s so clever. Perjury is an offence liable to imprisonment of up to fourteen years. IT’S NOT A LOOPHOLE IT’S A CRIME! #ableghttps://t.co/U4jjP7elrk pic.twitter.com/46swLWdIf5
