Another Protest of Channel 7’s Coverage of African Gang Crime Planned for Saturday

The fallout from Channel 7’s coverage of African youth gang crime in the state of Victoria continues. The assertion that the coverage of the issue was racially motivated has generated a call to action for another protest of Channel 7’s Coverage of African Gang Crime.

The protest is being planned through a Facebook event called “CHANNEL 7 PROTEST: ENOUGH IS ENOUGH” for Saturday, where the event organizers posted the following statement, placing special emphasis on the peacefulness of the protest:

“Channel 7’s shameful campaign to denigrate the African Community has seen our community declared guilty till proven innocent in the court of public opinion. We will not stay silent. We will unite to stand our ground and walk towards progression together. This is a NON-VIOLENT protest. Anyone with intentions other than this is not welcome. We want to again stress that this is a PEACEFUL demonstration. That is why we must come together for our voices to be heard.”

In the event discussion board, the peacefulness of the event was re-iterated, as event organizers reminded people not to act violently and directly disavowed intent to act violently. The Unshackled position is that the underlying reasoning behind the protest is lacking in intellectual honesty and that the coverage of the crime issue in Victoria is not racially motivated, rather is simply coverage of the issues on the ground. That being said we commend the organizers’ strong position on the peacefulness of their demonstration, as the right to peacefully assemble ends as soon as the first punch is thrown.
