Abolishing Immigration Authority Now Mainstream Leftist Political Proposal

Immigration, Police, Regressive Left, Rundown, US Politics

Amid the outrage caused by family separation at the United States’ southern border, a new radical proposal has established as a mainstream leftist political proposal. The Proposal? Abolishing the Immigration Authority of the USA.

The proposal seemed to first become mainstreamed by the young democratic socialist who recently dethroned a long-standing democratic congressman. The 28-year-old socialist claimed that the US’ immigration police (ICE) was acting immorally and had to be completely abolished and replaced with an institution that is more in-line with America values.

However, this young congressman, who could be considered a fringe example within the democratic party, is not the only one who has jumped on the bandwagon of destroying the enforcers of US immigration laws. Mainstream left-wing politicians such as Bernie Sanders, Kamala Harris, Kirsten Gillibrand, and Bill de Blasio have all come out as favouring the proposal to destroy ICE.

Though the narrative is that ICE is solely responsible for separating families at the border and deporting non-violent immigrants, their responsibilities also include thwarting human trafficking, child exploitation, cyber-crime, and some intelligence gathering. In this sense, ICE is a crucial part of the US security apparatus, and to suggest that abolishment is not only not harmful but somehow necessary does not hold water.

No matter how much you feel the exercise of family separation at the border is immoral, the fact is that it is not up to ICE to decide how these migrants are treated as they are simply following the procedure set by law. Many videos of arrests being made on the streets of the US where one member of the family is tearfully separated from the rest will tug at many people’s heart-strings, however, it does not fall outside of established legal practice to arrest and deport people who have entered the country illegally.

It is true that many parts of the American immigration system can be altered and fixed, but ICE is simply not a central ill that should be done away with.
