Gender politics is an area of politics the left in the west seem obsessed about, particularly in workplaces. One of their favourite pet causes in this area is the gender wage gap where we are told women only earn 77 cents in the dollar. The wage gap has constantly been debunked and is due to the different life and career choices men and women make.

When they are not raging about the gender wage gap the left are instead complaining about the lack of gender diversity in particular industries. Their main focus is science, engineering and IT for not having enough women employed in them. It is interesting they never complain about the lack of men in teaching, childcare or nursing.

Factual feminist Christina Hoff Somers has always correctly asked that if feminists are so worried about the lack of women in science then why do they all undertake gender studies at university? Studies of men and women have concluded that it is because their brains are different and they crave different desires in a profession which explains why certain professions tend to be dominated by one gender, not because of rank sexism and misogyny.

However, our ABC was only too eager to promote the findings of a study conducted by the University of Technology Sydney into who received Australian research funding. According to the study 79 per cent of Australian Research Council Linkage Infrastructure, Equipment and Facilities (ARC LIEF) grants went to males and 82 per cent National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) of grants went to males.

What was even more shocking to the ABC and the person who headed this study Professor Deb Verhoeven (who herself is not a scientist but a humanities professor) was that 84% of NHMRC grants went to men who worked in male-only teams. So now if you spend too much time with only men in or outside of work even out of sheer coincidence that is now cause for alarm?

But apparently the worst finding was the number of grants that went to men called Dave, they called this a Daversity problem. What are they trying to insinuate here?  That Dave is perhaps a common Anglo men’s name and that racial diversity is also a problem? That the name Dave bestows the most male privilege on a man?

Not only is men working with other men a problem but so is men mentoring other men as another Professor Clare Bradford from Deakin University added when commenting on the study “Men mentor men, and give references for other men”. I doubt that these professors would say that women mentoring other would be a problem.

Did it ever occur to them that because men and women are different (no gender is not a social construct) that men might find it easier to mentor another man? No, the explanation must be that it is another part of the patriarchal plan to lock women out of all the lucrative professions.

Not surprising their solution to fix this alleged problem is more social reengineering and thought policing “Stop focusing on women’s behaviour and focus on altering male behaviour in these networks”. This study of course offers no first-hand evidence that women are being discriminated against in these professions, just that there are not many women in them.

It is worth even asking the question is this gender imbalance even a problem? If women don’t want to pursue careers in science, why can’t we respect their choice? Why must we conclude the men in this profession must be sexists? Why must we have these campaigns for more women to study stem, science or coding? Not every gender imbalance is caused by discrimination.

The left and feminists should focus on actual cases of sexism and misogyny happening around the world, instead of smearing a whole profession of men for simply choosing a career which has been scientifically proven that their gender is predisposed to choosing. Woman are certainly not prohibited from pursuing any career they desire; how many times are young girls told they can do anything? Like most of what comes out of modern academia and our ABC this study deserves to be simply put in the bin.
